I try to remain open minded about the majority of things, but the activity portrayed in that GIF is positively stupid.

The real question is did they use a concord or a blackbird to deliver your package.

They must’ve used James May to deliver that package.

Yes that was spring semester of 2009. I graduated, and that’s all that counts.

I don’t see how it’s any worse than this, which is common practice in Moto GP

For one thing, in this activity, the person sticking their head out is also in control of the conveyance. For another, the person’s head is much closer to the center of mass of the conveyance. That other thing, for the sidecar occupant, is sheer lunacy.

What is the term of art for that style of racing?

Sidecar racing

On the other hand, the sidecar is immensely more stable than the bike under these conditions. There’s no risk of it sliding out from under him or of it high-siding (and let me tell you, I'm all to familiar with the dangers of that second one)

I’d call it “race to a beheading.”

I should have added, the ballast man in the gif is showing off a bit (I’m pretty sure it’s an exhibition, not competition). They don’t usually hang out that far, and they lead with their ass, not their head.
